Zippo Lighter World

Since 1936, the Zippo Company offered the option of a personalized lighter engraved with one’s initials. In addition, a customer could choose between two designs – the “Scotty Group” (an image of dogs) or the “Drunk” (an image of a drunk man leaning against a gaslight pole). The personalized lighter cost a dollar for the initials and 75 cents for an additional design. The initials were engraved against a background color, which a customer had a variety to choose from. From the colors red, green, blue, yellow, orange, purple, and white, the options seemed to be endless. In the 1940s and 50s, these initialed lighters were extremely popular as gifts, most likely due to their personalized nature. To further expand the business, Zippo decided to be featured in a wholesale mail-order catalog in 1936. Although the price was increased to two dollars, these lighters still remained a favorite. In addition to the catalog, founder Blaisdell promoted the product at stores all over the U.S.
