Dunhill Lighters

Dunhill is no doubt the most prestigious high end lighter company – its lighters are even dubbed as “works of art”. The founder of the company Alfred Dunhill did not start out manufacturing lighters. Instead, he initially made high end automobile accessories for the rich, but slowly moved into a different area of business as he began to produce accessories related to the art of smoking. The Dunhill Company made pipes and tobaccos in the beginning, but eventually realized that a high quality and utilitarian lighter was needed along with these other accessories.

The very first Dunhill lighter debuted in the early 1920’s as the “Dunhill Unique”. In time, Dunhill gained a reputation as a special, high end lighter that only the wealthy could afford. Dunhill lighters came in a variety of finishes: sterling silver, 9 carat, 14 carat, 15 carat, 16 carat, and 18 carat gold. Additionally, some of the lighters were equipped with other tools such as cigar cutters, watches, and pipe tampers. Other Dunhill lighters were covered with the most luxurious enamels of Germany and France.

Throughout the Deco Period, the Dunhill Company flourished and produced a number of the finest enameled lighters in its history. The well known Namiki enamellers of Japan were hired by the Dunhill Company to incorporate the Japanese method of lighter production, thus maintaining the company’s reputation for impeccable quality. At the same time, Dunhill poured its efforts into lighter innovation to spark ideas for new models. The Dunhill Company also started a new line of decorative lighters that came in a variety of shapes – horns, canes, golf balls, guns, and more. In the late 1940’s, Dunhill’s Silent Flame lighters were introduced into the market.

In the 1950’s, Dunhill once again took on another line of lighters called the Aquarium, which was actually a table lighter. These new lighters were manufactured from lucite, which was used to carve the inside of the lighter to create a “scene”. The carving was then filled in with paint to create a variety of motifs, the first one being an aquarium. Other motifs include aviary and hunting scenes.

As butane lighters took the market by storm, Dunhill followed the trend and produced its own line of butane lighters – the Rollagas lighters, which can still be found today.
